Seventh grader Jesse Amstutz, son of Neil and Janette Amstutz of Waterford Mennonite Church, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. Students answered oral questions on geography in this first-round of the 22nd annual bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society. As Bethany's representative Jesse will take a written test with opportunity to advance to the state competition in Indianapolis on Apr. 9.

For three weeks this summer, five students (William Schrock, Josh Helmuth, Blake Shetler, Grace Whiteford, and Alena Yoder) hosted youth from Joie et Vie (Joy and Life), a French Mennonite association working in conjuction with Mennonite Mission Network. In light of self-study data gathered from Bethany Christian Schools' current strategic planning process and the relevance of the music program to the school's mission, Bethany is initiating a thorough review of its music program to better position the program for increasing effectiveness in helping Bethany achieve its mission.

Opportunities to Explore Bethany

Students considering Bethany are encouraged to come visit for a day. You are welcome to arrange a visit on any day that suits you. However, the school has special Visit Days scheduled for Feb. 18 and March 3. Visit Days provide an opportunity for students in grades 5-11 interested in exploring Bethany to shadow a student for a day. Interested students must register ahead by calling Sarah Yoder, director of admissions, at 574 534-2567. Parents are also welcome to drop in to meet with Sarah or to visit a class or chapel.

Leadership Development Program

One way Bethany contributes to the life of the church and the world is in developing leadership skills in young people. Bethany has strengthened its leadership development by implementing a process that will provide goals, teaching tools, and evaluation of skills for those in leadership roles. Select seniors will also be recognized at graduation for excelling in developing their leadership skills during high school.

Fostering Positive Relationships: The Ophelia Project

Students at Bethany Christian Middle School are committed to be honest and trustworthy, accepting, respectful, and encouraging. Students, together with faculty, agreed that these characteristics should help define who a Bethany student is. Students and faculty are focusing on relationships this year as part of a new Ophelia Project initiative to help middle school youth build respectful and compassionate relationships.

High school orchestras from three Mennonite schools, Bethany Christian, Goshen, IN, Central Christian, Kidron, OH, and Iowa Mennonite, Kalona, IA, will convene on the Goshen College campus for the 16th annual Midwest MSC Orchestra Festival.
